Saturday 1 December 2018 was a night of craftiness like UK TV has not seen before. From 9pm to 8am, renown quilting demonstrator Sarah Payne took over the airwaves to teach an all night quilt-along. Floor managers, producers and directors donated their time through the night to raise funds for mental health charity, Mind on the UK’s largest craft TV shopping channel, Create and Craft.
“I often hear that there is not enough sewing on TV” says Sarah Payne “now I have evidence to the contrary – no one has done anything like this on UK TV before”. 20 members of the public joined Sarah live in the studio as they sewed through the night, with many viewers emailing and calling in to the studio to show their progress in this one of a kind crafting get-together. Quilts were created from beginning to end by viewers of all abilities – and no one fell asleep in the studio. All attendees were given a goody bag full of sewing loveliness – including a copy of Quilt Now magazine to take home and enjoy.
Everyone involved was overwhelmed by the response and support from viewers. Create and Craft’s Assistant Producer for the quilt along, Hannah Sabbatini very much enjoyed being involved with the crafting community, getting together to make a difference: “Hearing everyone’s stories on how crafting has been a huge part of their lives was very heart-warming and I was proud to be a part of the event.” The live gallery received over 400 e-mails overnight from customers getting involved.
Sarah said: “ The amount of work that went into producing this amazing event, and the number of different departments within Create and Craft that had to be involved to achieve what we did, was phenomenal. I am so proud to be part of such a talented and caring team. We worked together, and crafted together, all in aid of a great cause. It just goes to show the power of quilting!”
£5850 was raised via donations and the sale of quilt kits for the quilt along event, all of which went to the charity.
